It’s going to be Italy vs Germany on the 2010 UEFA Champions League final. The game between Bayern Munich and Inter makes this year’s Champions League final unpredictable. To some people it is a game for two underachievers in football. “Who would’ve imagined that these two teams will be the final match?” Well, don’t think like that.
FC Internazionale Milano is not just an ordinary Italian team. They have dominated the Italy Serie A league for so many years and have 17 Italian titles to their name.If you will include the Italian Super Cup and Coppa Italia, Inter has total of 26 national trophies. They have won three UEFA Cups title in 1991, 1994, and 1998. As of now, Inter still leads the Italy Serie A with a total of 73 points. They are two points away from the no. 2 team, AS Roma which has 21 wins, 8 draws, and 6 losses.
Inter did a very impressive performance in the first leg of the Champions League semifinals on April 20, 2010. The 3-1 loss jeopardized Barca’s attempt to becoming European soccer’s first repeat champion in two decades. According to Barcelona sporting director Txiki Begiristain the 450-mile bus trip to Milan by coach rather than by air due to the travel restrictions in place due to the volcanic ash cloud, gives coach Mourino’s side an “unfair advantage.” Barcelona appeared fatigue and this was their reason why they were beaten by Inter.
According to coach Mourinho, though Inter was small in Champions League terms and a team that struggled to qualify for the elimination rounds, they were able to beat the best team in the world. In the second leg of Champions League semifinals yesterday, Gerard Pique’s late strike proved insufficient for Barcelona to qualify in the finals. Inter Milan was reduced to 10 men, after Thiago Motta’s 28th-minute dismissal. Though their midfielder was kicked out of the game, the Italians defended heroically.
Bayern Munich is considered as the most successful club in German football, having won 21 German titles and 14 cups. Bayern currently leads Bundesliga with 64 points. They beat Lyon 1-0 in first leg of Champions League semifinal. Bayern winger Arjen Robben cut inside from the right flank and put the ball under goalkeeper Hugo Lloris with a shot the deflected slightly off teammate Thomas Mueller, who ducked in an effort to avoid the ball and lifted the team as he scored in the 68th minute. Bayern beats Lyon again in the second leg. Ivica Olic’s hat trick puts the team in the Champions League final for the first time in nine years. THe Croatian winger gave Bayern 3 goals. He scored in the 26th minute, a minute after his teammate Hamit Altintop received yellow card. He added another goal in the 67th minute, giving his team a two-point lead and destroying the focus of Lyon. His third goal in the 78th minute marked the end of Lyon’s dream of getting into the final. Bayern will seeks its fifth European title against Inter in the final on May 22 at Madrid.
