2010 FIFA WORLD CUP: The month-long World Cup tournament has just ended. After four years of waiting, there’s a new name on the trophy. Spain won the 2010 World Cup title after beating Netherlands 1-0 at Soccer City Stadium on Sunday, July 11, 2010. It will become Spain’s most unforgettable day for it was their first appearance in the World Cup final and their first World Cup title.
“Man of the Match” goes to Barcelona midifelder Andres Iniesta who scored the winning goal in the 116th minute of extra time. The game looked set to end in a penalty shootout with the score deadlocked at 0-0 but Iniesta prevented that to happen. Netherlands, which was reduced to 10 after Everton defender John Heitinga was pulled out for having a red card, had a very poor defense at that moment. It was a wide open field that Iniesta was able to drive the ball inside the box assisted by Cesc Fabregas.
“We have all done an incredible job. I don’t think we even realize what we have done. It’s the most beautiful that there is. It’s spectacular. When I struck it, it just had to go in”
Andres Iniesta, Spain midfielder
It was a huge disappointment in the Dutch side. Before the match began, people in Amsterdam were so excited but when the game went to extra time, Dutch fans were clutching their head. The atmosphere in Amsterdam became more gloomy when their World Cup dream has been snatched from them in the last few minutes of extra minute.
It was the third appearance of Netherlands in the World Cup finals. Their first appearance was way back 1974 when they were defeated by Germany and their second appearance was way back 1978 when they were beaten by Argentina. They really hoped that after 32 years, they can be able to win the trophy but unfortunately they were beaten by Spain with just one goal.
