Sport Lisboa e Benfica, commonly referred as Benfica, defeated Liverpool, 2-1, in Europa League quarter final first leg in Lisbon yesterday, April 1, 2010. Oscar Cardozo’s two spot-kicks ruined Liverpool’s focus on the game.
Danish defender Daniel Agger scored first at nine minutes in the first half. Captain Steven Gerrard squared a clever free kick along the ground into the penalty area, where Agger sent a backheel into the corner of the net.
It was a perfect start for the Reds but things changed after left winger Ryan Babel was sent off after he received a red card for thrusting a hand in Luisao’s face with eight minutes before halftime.
Liverpool striker Fernando Torres thought he scored just before halftime when he put the ball in the net following Gerrard’s free kick but referee Jonas Eriksson said it’s offside.

Paraguayan striker Oscar Cardozo started to score at 59 minutes in the game. Then, he broke the tie after he scored for his second goal at 79 minutes.
Liverpool had a very disappointing performance. The away goal is very important and now they need to score one goal at Anfield to go to the semifinals.
