Liverpool striker Fernando Torres will miss the three remaining games and probably will not be participating the FIFA World Cup 2010 due to knee surgery.
This is what boss Rafael Benitez is talking about. Benitez, who was not so affected to George Gillett and Tom Hicks’ attempt to sell the club, have commented last Sunday that he’s more concerned about the fitness of Torres.
Torres flew to Barcelona for a scheduled checkup with Dr. Ramon Cugat, the surgeon who operated on him in January 2010 and on April 12, 2010, after Torres missed the goalless draw against Fulham with a knee injury, Liverpool club have released the following statement:
“Fernando Torres was examined by a knee specialist this afternoon in Spain. He received treatment and will continue to do so over the next few days, with the injury being reassessed later this week.”
Torres underwent surgery in Barcelona on a torn cartilage in his right knee, the same knee which was operated in January. Liverpool spokesperson said that they cannot comment ahead of the operation. Since Torres underwent knee surgery, it is assumed that he will be out for 6 weeks which is the usual rehabilitation period for this type of procedure. The club’s leading goalscorer would be a big help for Spain national team in FIFA World Cup 2010 if he will be able to resume training in late May or early June.
