Gerald McCoy was the third pick overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2010 NFL Draft. McCoy tried to hold his emotions as he walked the red carpet at Radio City Music Hall on Thursday but he can’t stop the tears from falling as he was called by commissioner Roger Goodell as the No.3 overall pick. McCoy told the media that he asked commissioner Goodell if it was “ok” to weep. Though he was told that its ok to show his emotions, he told himself that he’s not going to cry. But it did not actually happened that night – McCoy was the first to cry.
He went up the stage with his family including his father and his 4 year-old daughter Nevaeh. McCoy dedicated this memorable moment to his mother who died in 2007. McCoy gave a bear hug to Goodell, then pointed a finger toward the heavens. Like other football players, McCoy was really excited on that day. He even spent his week watching Youtube to see how players reacted upon being selected in the 2009 draft.
The 22 year-old defensive lineman was the 2008 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Even though he was beaten by Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh for the same honor last season, he was able to maintain his good record and remained productive in his team. McCoy’s college teammate, Sam Bradford, was the No. 1 overall pick by St. Louis Rams.
