GERMANY BEATS URUGUAY FOR THIRD PLACE: The game between Uruguay and Germany seems like the World Cup final match. It was not a boring game but the most intense game so far. Both aiming to at least get the third place medal and that slot was taken by the Germans.
Three-time World Cup champions Germany won over the two-time champion Uruguay, 3-2, on Saturday night at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Port Elizabeth. It was the second time in a row that Germany has taken the third slot. Last tournament, Germany played in the third place play-off with Portugal. It’s been 10 years since Germany played in the final match and won the World Cup title. This team tried hard but it still not their moment.

Bayern Munich midfielder Thomas Muller was the first one to score in the game. Muller scored in the 19th minute and US Citta di Palermo forward Edinson Cavani equalized for Uruguay in the 28th minute when he glide a shot past goalkeeper Hans Joerg Butt. It was a tied game in the first half but Atletico Madrid forward Diego Forlan scored in the 51st minute giving his team a one-point lead. But the lead did not stay long. Five minutes after Forlan’s took a shot, Hamburger midfielder Marcell Jansen cuts the lead. It was a tied game again not until VfB Stuttgart Sami Khedira took a shot in the 82nd minute. Khedira’s first goal in this tournament Germany a 3-2 victory over Uruguay and third place for the second straight World Cup.
This is what Khedira said in an interview made by AFP:
“Of course we had all hoped for something better, but this match for third place was also a final that we absolutely wanted to win. At this World Cup we were a very young team and we’ve put down a marker. But we obviously want to win more in the future.”
