Ankaragucu forward Robert Vittek was the one who started the spark in the 25th minute after his teammate Juraj Kucka intercepted AS Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi’s slipshod pass. Vittek added another goal in the 73rd minute after nipping the ball in front of Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini and slotted the ball past to Cagliari goalkeeper Federico Marchetti.
Vittek gave his team a two point lead with 27 minutes left in the game. Eight minutes after Vittek’s second goal, Udinese second striker Antonio Di Natale put a rebound of Napoli forward Fabio Quagliarella shot into an empty net. It was the first goal of Italy which gave his team a little hope to move on. But Spartak Trnava midfielder Kamil Kopunek scored in the 89th minute putting back their 2 point lead. With a minute left in the game, Italy was hoping for a miracle to come. Miracle happened during the extra time period when Quagliarella found a way to score for their team but it was already too late to win.
