January 3, 2010 – College football bowl game scheduled for today is the 2011 Orange Bowl match between Stanford Cardinal vs Virginia Tech Hokies. Hokies vs Cardinal is brought to you by Discover Financial and the live telecast will air on ESPN at 8:30 p.m. ET.
Its the fourth appearance of No. 13 Virginia Tech in Orange Bowl and out of four games played in this bowl they were beaten twice and only got one win. Hokies first appeared in 1996 and were beaten by Nebraska Cornhuskers, 21-41. They scored first, taking a 7-point lead at the end of the first quarter. They were able to score 7 points again in the second quarter but Corhuskers tripled their score. They did score another 7 points in the third quarter but Cornhuskers doubled their score. It was in the fourth quarter when Hokies failed to score any points.
Hokies returned in 2008 and were beaten by Kansas Jayhawks, 2-21. They were back again in 2009 and finally won the trophy. They have beaten Cincinatti Bearcats, 20-7, in the 75th anniversary of Orange Bowl. Virginia Tech running back Darren Evans received the MVP trophy.
After two years, Hokies are back at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens to face No. 4 Stanford. Their three years experience playing in Orange Bowl is one of their edge against Stanford but the only problem is they’re going to miss two of their key players in the first quarter. Head coach Frank Beamer has announced last week that safety Antone Exum and running back David Wilson will not join the team in the first quarter because they have violated team rules (View: Hokies Players Out From Orange Bowl)
