It was a very disappointing game for Netherlands. They had a perfect record upon entering the championship game but this record was broken by the Spaniards. Spain won the 2010 FIFA World Cup title after Andres Iniesta strike with four minutes left of extra-time. It’s the first appearance of Spain in the World Cup finals and their first World Cup victory. They are also the second nation to win the World Cup (2010) and UEFA European Championship (2008).
Over 84,000 people witnessed how Iniesta puts Spain ahead 1-0 in the 116th minute, just 5 minutes after Netherlands were reduced to 10 man. Iniesta’s winning goal prevented the game from reaching the penalty shootout. He took a pass from Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas, drove the ball and and then volleyed it past Dutch goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.
Spain really deserves the World Cup title. From first half to the extra time, they were so unstoppable. The Dutch team cannot stop them and what they do to control the game was to commit several fouls. They had a total of 28 fouls while Spain committed 19 fouls. The parade of yellow cards continued in the second half and English referee Howard Webb recorded a total of 13 yellow cards (Netherlands – 8 yellow cards and Spain – 5 yellow cards), the highest number ever for a World Cup final.
