Former South Africa President, Nelson Mandela, will not attend the 2010 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony because of the tragic accident that happened earlier today, June 11, 2010. Mandela’s 13-year-old great-granddaughter, died in a car crash after last night’s World Cup kick-off concert at Orlando Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg.
This is the statement issued in Nelson Mandela’s Foundation website:
“It would therefore be inappropriate for him to personally attend the 2010 FIFA World Cup opening celebrations. We are sure that South Africans and people all over the world will stand in solidarity with Mr Mandela and his family in the aftermath of this tragedy.”
According to police reports, Zenani, the grandchild of Mandela’s daughter Zindzi, died in one-car accident. Zenani was in the car with Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Mandela’s ex-wife. As of now they cannot give full details regarding the tragic accident but recent reports says that the driver was found drunk. The driver, whose name was not released to the public, had been arrested and police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
FIFA President Joseph “Sepp” Blatter, issued a statement on FIFA’s official web site:
“The entire football family mourns with you and your family, and today we stand by your side.”
